August has officially arrived which means there’s less than 2 months of summer left. Although I wish someone would tell Manchester this. Summer appears to have ended weeks ago and the forecast is pretty much rain for the rest of August. But enough of my very British moaning about the weather. Here are three self care ideas to try out this August.

Try a New Exercise

Exercise is excellent for your mental health. In fact, some studies have shown it to be as effective as antidepressants for managing depression. It’s certainly one of the main things that I use to manage my mental health.

Mix things up a bit this month and try a new exercise. A new exercise class, something relaxing and meditative like yoga or something a bit more energetic like boxing. I like to keep things fresh with different types of exercise, mainly running, yoga and Muay Thai.

You never know, you may discover a new hobby!

Sort Your Sleep Schedule Out

Sleep, and lack of it, can have a really big impact on your mental health. I always start to feel a bit frazzled after a few nights of little sleep. It makes me much less equipped to manage my mental health.

When my sleep schedule starts to get a bit out of whack it can make it more difficult for me to fall asleep at night and more difficult to stay asleep. But try as I might, I still struggle to set and maintain a regular sleep schedule. This month, I’m going to try sleeping at the same time each night and waking up at the same time each morning (a little later at weekends mind you) to see if that helps. Give it a try yourself!

Make Time to See Friends

Another thing that can be difficult to keep up with when you’re not feeling great mentally. Depression can make it difficult to muster the energy to socialise and anxiety can make you want to hide away. But when I force myself out to see friends I always come back feeling better.

In order to recover from mental health you need the help of those around you. You need to go out and have fun, or at least try to. Make a special effort this month to get out and see your people.

Happy August!
